Rediscovering New Haven: A Weekend Getaway at the Iconic Omni Hotel
Justin and I had the pleasure of living in New Haven before having kids. It was a chapter in our lives filled with memorable experiences that we often reminisce about. When we decided we needed a little kid free time, the idea of a quick weekend getaway in downtown New Haven, visiting some of our favorite spots, seemed like the perfect plan. The iconic Omni Hotel was the first thing that came to mind.
Our memories of New Haven made us excited to return and relive some of the moments we had cherished. The Omni Hotel, a blend of modern luxury and historic charm, was a natural choice for our stay. It had always been a beacon of sophistication in the heart of the city.
Stepping into the hotel's lobby felt like revisiting an old friend. The mixture of contemporary design and New England's heritage brought back a flood of memories. The staff's warm welcome and attention to detail reinforced our decision to choose The Omni. It was a familiar comfort that set the tone for our getaway.
Our guest room was a cozy haven, with all the modern comforts we needed. The city views from our window felt like a connection to our past and the changes that had taken place since we left. It was a reminder of the dynamic nature of the city we once called home.
As food enthusiasts, our trip wouldn't be complete without indulging in some culinary delights. John Davenport's Restaurant, located atop the Omni Hotel, offered a blend of classic and contemporary flavors. The views of the city's historic architecture added an extra layer of charm to our dining experience. From appetizers to dessert, every bite was a celebration of the city's diverse offerings.
But our journey wasn't just about relaxation and fine dining. We also sought serenity at Ripple Float and Wellness. This oasis of calm amidst the city's hustle and bustle offered a unique experience – floatation therapy. The sensation of floating in Epsom salt-infused water was a pleasant surprise, bringing relaxation and mental clarity we didn't know we needed. After our float we enjoyed a 45 minute infrared sauna session and came out feeling rejuvenated and incredibly refreshed.
After a morning at the Spa we headed out to some of our favorite places around the city. If your visiting here are a few of my favorite reccomendations:
New Haven Waterfront: Stroll along the New Haven Waterfront and take in in views of sailboats and historic architecture.
Nica's Market: For an authentic local experience, Nica's Market is a must-visit. This charming neighborhood market offers the most delicous gourmet sandwiches, artisanal cheeses, fresh produce, and a variety of specialty items. I can promise you won’t find a better cappuccino around (especially if you ask Joe, the owner to make it for you!).
Skappo Italian Restaurant: This has been a longtime favorite date night location for Justin and I. Skappo is an Intimate family owned Italian restaurant, that captures the essence of traditional Italian cooking. From homemade pasta to exquisite wine pairings, each dish is a celebration of the owners Italian heritage that the family shares with everyone who comes to them to dine.
A Pizza Tour to Remember: No visit to New Haven is complete without diving into its iconic pizza scene. Embark on a pizza tour that showcases the city's culinary legacy. Modern Apizza, Pepe's Pizzeria, Sally's Apizza, and BAR are legendary establishments that have perfected the art of crafting delicious pizzas with distinct flavors in coal fired ovens.
Yale's Academic Legacy and Shopping: While in New Haven, be sure to explore Yale University's campus, a hub of history, architecture, and the Yale University Art Gallery. Then, head to The Shops at Yale for a mix of boutiques, galleries, and specialty stores. It’s a great place to walk around, grab a coffee and do a little shopping!
Our weekend getaway wasn't just a pause from the daily grind; it was a chance to reconnect with a city that had played a significant role in our lives. The Omni Hotel served as a link between the past and the present, inviting us to explore both its comforts and the city's many hidden treasures. As we headed home, we were reminded that New Haven's charm is enduring and that our connection with it had only grown stronger over the years.
