I haven't always been diligent about my oral health though. For years, I was guilty of “lazy oral hygiene.” You know…skip the floss, head to the dentist every other year-ish and occasionally miss my bedtime brushing because I was “just so tired.” Part of my laissez faire attitude toward oral health was because I believed some myths about caring for my pearly whites and the effects it could have on my overall health. I wanted to share with you a few myths you may be believing so you can get your oral health and that ivory grin in tip-top shape.
1. You need bleach or hydrogen peroxide if you want really white teeth.
I always assumed that if I wanted my teeth to actually be white, I needed to skip on any toothpaste that wasn't loaded with bleach or hydrogen peroxide. I always went straight for the bleach pens, the whitening strips, and the full-of-icky-ingredients toothpastes that are jam-packed with whitening chemicals. The truth is, there are gentler ways to get pearly whites and some of the harsher whitening ingredients can actually damage your enamel. I actually found ARM & HAMMER™ Essentials Whiten and Strengthen Toothpaste right at Dollar General. It’s not only free of ingredients like parabens, dyes, preservatives, Sodium lauryl sulfate, and artificial sweeteners, it also allows you to get outstanding whitening and enamel strengthening without compromises. It can get your teeth two shades whiter, all while actually giving you 2x stronger enamel. That’s because it's powered by baking soda, which naturally whitens teeth, and is packed with naturally sourced calcium to help protect and repair enamel. It’s full of essential oils to freshen breath, so you can get the pearliest of whites without compromises.
2. It’s unlikely I would get gum disease.
Sadly, gum disease is all too common. Recent studies by the Center for Disease Control have shown that almost half (47%) of adults 30 and older have some form of gum disease, and 64% of adults 65 and older have moderate to severe gum disease. Brushing and flossing twice a day, along with regular dentist visits, is imperative for good oral hygiene.
3. It doesn’t matter what time of day I brush
Actually, brushing at a certain time does have an impact on your oral health. During the day, our saliva flow is actually higher—which provides a cleansing effect for our teeth and gums. At night, we produce less saliva—leading to a high buildup of bacteria. When you don’t brush before bed at night, food particles that might normally be washed away with your natural saliva flow can stay stuck in teeth and cause tooth decay over time. Brushing with a toothpaste like ARM & HAMMER™ Essentials right after meals, and especially after high-sugar drinks or snacks, can also go a long way in preventing cavities.
4. Oral health is not connected to the rest of the body
Many people don’t know this, but tooth decay and periodontal disease can actually cause bacteria from your mouth to enter into your bloodstream and result in numerous health issues, including infection in other parts of your body. There have been studies showing a correlation between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease, stroke, and bacterial pneumonia. Making sure your teeth and gums are healthy is an important way to care for your body’s overall health.
I hope that debunking some of these myths has been helpful for you! Just remember that having good oral health and white teeth doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money or compromise on the ingredients you use. I recommend heading to Dollar General and grabbing a tube of my favorite ARM & HAMMER™ Essentials Whiten and Strengthen Toothpaste to help get healthier, whiter, and stronger teeth.
